The evidence against Jimmy Rodgers in murder of Teresa Sievers

LEE COUNTY, Fla. -- We're getting some insight as to how Jimmy Rodgers’ defense lawyers may be planning to lay out their case to the jurors, and it's all about the evidence.

Here's what we know: Investigators say Rodgers’ alleged accomplice, Curtis Wright, rented a Hyundai Elantra in Missouri days before Teresa Sievers was murdered in 2015.

The report says the car traveled 2,700 miles. The driving distance between where Wright lived to the Sievers House is about 2,300 miles.

Detectives also tell Fox 4 that the information from the car's GPS system shows a route created from Wright's home to the Sievers home.

Investigators say Jimmy Rodgers was with Wright on this trip.

They say Rodgers was seen on surveillance video at the Walmart on Six Mile Cypress in Fort Myers, just a day before the murder, buying suspicious materials. Things like flushable wet wipes, 30 gallon trashbags, and a lock pick set.

Hours after Teresa's death, detectives say the GPS in the rental car documented the trip back to Wright's house in Missouri.

An expert we talked to says evidence shows Rodgers may have been at the crime scene, but that doesn't mean he was guilty. "The challenge for the state is proving not just that Jimmy Rodgers was here, but that he actually took part in the murder, because he's not guilty just by being there," says attorney Spencer Cordell.

That's where the testimonies of Curtis Wright and his girlfriend will come in, and both are listed as witnesses in this trial.

Wright is currently serving a 25-year prison sentence after taking a plea deal.

Mark Sievers is accused of hiring Rodgers and Wright to kills his wife Teresa for insurance money. Mark Sievers’ trial will begin once Jimmy Rodgers’ trial in completed.
