Troopers shared how this happened:
Around 7 a.m. a Chevrolet going south on State Road 31 tried to pass other southbound traffic via the north travel lane. At the same time, a Hyundai was going north on State Road 31.
The front of the Chevrolet hit the front of the Hyundai.
Both drivers, an 81-year-old woman from Arcadia, and a 23-year-old woman from Punta Gorda, were both pronounced dead on scene.

Florida Highway Patrol reports state troopers are on the scene of a deadly sedan vs. SUV crash on State Road 31.
Two people are reportedly dead, FHP said.
FHP said it happened three miles south of Bermont Road, Wednesday morning. They were still on scene as of 8 a.m.
There was still a complete roadblock on State Road 31, at last check.
