UPDATE May 24, 1:18 p.m.:
North Port Police say they are looking into an armed home invasion robbery as a targeted incident.
According to a spokesperson, three men posed as Amazon delivery drivers to get into the home on Hobblebrush Drive around 1:30 p.m. Friday.
Investigators say the men convinced the homeowner's daughter to open the door. When she did, one of the men pointed a gun at her before all three entered the home.
According to police, the armed men stole $5,000 and ransacked the house searching for more money. Detectives told Fox 4 the men held the mother and daughter captive inside the home until the father returned.
When the father arrived home shortly before 5 p.m., police say he found the front door locked, which he said was unusual. After attempting to enter through the back door, investigators say he saw one of the suspects on the back lanai.
A fight broke out between the father and one of the suspects before all three took off and went north through neighboring backyards, police say.
The suspects then found an unlocked red Ford F-150 with keys inside on the 2500 block of Charter Oak Drive, which is one street over from the home invasion. Police say they stole the truck and were last seen heading south on Haberland Drive, according to license plate reader data.
Crime scene investigators responded and collected evidence from the home and items discarded behind other homes in the area.
Police do not believe this was a random crime.
"Random robberies such as this are highly uncommon in our community," a spokesperson told Fox 4. "We are strongly looking into this as a targeted incident."
Investigators say it's likely the suspects are not from North Port, and they are working with other agencies in the region.
The investigation remains ongoing, and the suspects have not yet been identified.
