LEE COUNTY, Fla. — Family and friends gathered for Deputy Sheriff First Class Steven Mazzotta's memorial service Saturday morning.

Deputy Mazzotta passed away Monday due to medical complications related to COVID-19.

“We are here mourning the loss of Deputy First Class Steven Mazzotta. Nothing we say or do can fill the void that has been created with his passing," Chaplain Clinton Cottrell said.

His nephew, Sergeant Fred Mazzotta, said he cherished the memories he made with his uncle.

Paul Barnes, Mazzotta's father's son-in-law, said Mazzotta loved his family -- even more than his beloved Camero.

Carmine Marceno, the Lee County Sheriff, said Mazzotta was always helping others and would volunteer his time to help his team.

It is surreal to think we are all here today mourning this incredible loss. Deputy Sheriff First Class Steven Mazzotta was truly one of a kind," Marceno said.

Sheriff Marceno honored Mazzotta by promoting him to Sergeant Mazzotta.

Deputy First Class Steven Mazzotta worked for LCSO for 18 years. He joined the agency in 2003 as a corrections officer.

Funeral arrangements are being planned with his family.
