CAPE CORAL, Fl. — On Thursday, September 6, 2019, Cape Coral Police say Matthew Christopher Girard, 48, travelled down Skyline Boulevard on a 2003 Honda Ruckus. They say a minivan, crossing the intersection at SW 37th Street, collided with the moped. Girard died from his injuries.
At this time, we do not know the cause of the accident.
FOX 4 revisited the scene of the accident and spoke with people who live in and travel through that area.
A common concern: the impact plants and other shrubs in the median have on visibility.
Complaints we heard include the following:
“The bush right there is kinda high.”
“They need to trim these bushes down here”.
“I have to inch out into the road and try to see if anyone’s coming.”
While there’s no official proof that the plants in the median caused the accident, we took our concerns to the City of Cape Coral.
They tell us they’ll have the transportation division take a look at this intersection.
The city also says that if you have concerns about an intersection, report it to 311.
The Cape Coral Police Department advises all drivers to use caution and visually check intersections before proceeding safely.
Matthew Girard was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
His friends tell FOX 4 that he was a “good man”, who encouraged others to ride safely.
We’ve reached out the Cape Coral Police Department to learn more about the safety of this intersection, and the number of incidents that have occurred there.
