FORT MYERS, Fla. — The Florida Highway Patrol says one person has died following a vehicle vs. pedestrian crash on Crystal Drive at Fordham Street in Fort Myers.

FHP says the victim was a 12-year-old Fort Myers boy who was crossing Crystal Drive on his motorized scooter when he was struck by an SUV.

“It looks like the scooter was traveling north here on Fordham attempting to cross Crystal Drive at an angle, in doing so the SUV was traveling west on Crystal and it was a collision... It's tragic," said Lieutenant Greg Bueno, Florida Highway Patrol.

FHP says the boy died on the scene and the driver of the SUV is cooperating in the investigation.

Bueno notes that accidents like this are not uncommon in the area.

"This type of tragedy occurred 3417 times last year and every single one of them are difficult, and this one especially because of the age," said Bueno.

This is an ongoing investigation. Fox 4 will keep you up to date on the findings.
