FORT MYERS, Fla. — “If you don’t care at all…just wait 12 years.”

Ella Thiele says when it comes to our environment: not caring is not an option anymore.

She's on a mission to ban the plastic bag, and she's not alone.

Over 400 people support her cause, and the efforts of her partner in change - her father, D.J. Thiele.

Together, the father-daughter duo says they want Lee County to phase out and ban the use of plastic bags.

The concept isn’t new to our state.

The City of Coral Gables banned the single-use plastic bag in 2017.

Gainesville also banned the bag, though enforcement is expected to begin in 2020.

But D.J. Thiele says a ban here could still be historical.

“If Lee County does this, it could be the first county in Florida to ban plastic bags,” he says.

Their efforts have brought them to the desks of local commissioners, and leadership.

This week, the Thieles met with Sanibel Mayor Kevin Ruane. Today, they’re scheduled to meet with Lee County Commissioner District 1 John Manning.

Community support continues to grow, the Thieles say.

But, Ella emphasized the importance of teens getting involved, too.

“You’re young. You don’t think you have a voice, but everyone does. Put it on your Instagram. Tell your parents.”

Ella inspirational nature caught the attention of her neighbors, including Greg Kosch.

He says he asked Ella to teach him how to sew, so he could re-purpose some of his clothes.

Ella, he says, showed him how easy it was to stop using plastic bags.

“Don’t be afraid to use your favorite bags…or your old t shirts…and turn them into shopping bags,” Kosch says.

As for D.J. Thiele, he says they’re determined to impact neighbors, the community, local & state leaders, as well as anyone who will listen.

“Together, we’re going to get this done.”
