Marie Hughes has been living with crumbling walls and mold growing in her carpet and on the ceiling for months.
She's lived at the Lago Del Sol apartment complex in Fort Myers since 2013. She says that the problems started in April and despite repeated maintenance requests, nothing has changed.
"Plain as day, you can see it", she told Four In Your Corner.
When we spoke with Hughes at her apartment, she explained how the mold started with a small leak in her son's room. As months went by, things progressively got worse. She says now things have gotten so bad, she;s had to move things out of her son's rooms because the mold has begun to grow on the furniture and other personal belongings.
Both Hughes and her children are living with disabilities. One of her sons has asthma. the mold growing in his bedroom has made it harder for him to breathe.
"It has affected him. He's had to use his rescue inhaler so much more than he used to."
Hughes says that she's followed the procedures fro getting the problem addressed as outlined in her lease. Months later, she feels that her landlord hasn't done what was needed to address her concerns and fix the problems in her building.
One of the people helping Hughes through this is her sister Mayra Gavin. Gavin says she's done all she can to help her sister including writing to the company that manages the building. She's hoping that with perseverance, she'll help her sister get the problems in her apartment fixed.
"For my sister and my nephews to be treated this way, it just shouldn't be", Gavin told Fox 4.
