LEE COUNTY, Fla. -- In a move largely anticipated in the wake of Sheriff Mike Scott's retirement announcement, Undersheriff Carmine Marceno has been appointed Lee County Sheriff by Governor Rick Scott.

Sheriff Scott announced his retirement on September 10th after 14 years as sheriff, taking effect September 24th.

The 46-year-old Marceno has been serving in the Lee County Sheriff’s Office since 2013. He received a U.S. Department of Justice Graduation Certificate from the FBI National Academy.  In recent years, he has become the public face of the sheriff's office as Sheriff Scott reduced his public appearances.

“Sheriff Mike Scott has been dedicated to serving the people of Lee County for the past 30 years. We are grateful for his service to his community and to Florida. Today, I am proud to appoint Carmine Marceno Jr. as Sheriff of Lee County. With Undersheriff Marceno having nearly 20 years of law enforcement experience and having worked closely with Sheriff Scott, I am confident that he will work every day to protect and serve Lee County,” says Gov. Scott.

“I’d like to thank Governor Scott for his leadership and for continuing to invest in public safety so that Florida’s crime rate could hit a 47-year low in 2018. It has truly been an honor to serve the Lee County community. Undersheriff Marceno is an experienced law enforcement officer who has worked with me for years, and I have the utmost confidence that he will keep working every day to protect our families and visitors,” says Sheriff Scott.

The sheriff position will be up for election in 2020, and Marceno is expected to campaign for the position.
