There have been two incidents in the past week where bikes have been stolen off Everglades Boulevard.
In both cases, the bikes were secured to a stop sign, but the suspects were able to break them.
Lourdes Colon's son's bike was taken after the crooks cut through the lock.
"He found it on the floor and it was broken, it looks like it just snapped."
Her son, and other students rely on bikes to get them to school bus stops that are sometimes a mile away from home.
"It's quite the walk in the heat, so yeah the bikes are definitely the way to go," she said.
Another bike was taken from a street corner a mile north of Lourdes home, at 58th Avenue Northeast.
"We've been here for 10 years, and nothing like this has every happened, I didn't even know they were having problems with bike thefts in the neighborhood, until the deputy let me know."
So far there have been no arrests in either case.
