FORT MYERS, Fla. -- The Lee County Sheriff's Office Fraud Line says they are getting numerous complaints about scam technical support calls this week.
The reports say someone calls claiming to be from the “Microsoft Refund Department”.
Deputies say this is a scam designed to trick you into believing you are due a refund from the technical support company used to protect your computer. The motive is to gain remote access of your computer in order to steal your personal data and money.
Here are some things you can do to avoid becoming a victim of this scam:
· Hang up on unexpected calls from anyone who claims to be tech support.
· Do not return voice messages from anyone who claims to be tech support.
· Never give control of your computer or share passwords with anyone you do not know.
· Know that Microsoft will not make unsolicited phone calls to help you with your computer.
