CAPE CORAL, Fla. -- Two kids steal a rifle from a house, but things took a quick turn once a neighbor sees them with the rifle, and tries to stop them.

According to police, while the kids were running away, a shot goes off, and they dump the rifle into a bush nearby.

Police say a 15-year-old boy, and an 18-year-old girl, Mackenzie Silverman, were the ones looking to steal the rifle from the house on NW 4th Street in Cape Coral.

Neighbors like Jeff Carlson, who heard the shot go off say that sort of thing doesn’t happen much around here. “My wife came out a few minutes later and said, did you hear that? And I said yeah it sounded like a gun,” said Carlson.

He says it’s a place where a lot of new homes are being built, and new families are coming in. Carlson walks his dogs every day in that area and just wants the neighborhood to be safe. "That’s what people do now, buy guns, we just don't want them going off in the neighborhood, We don’t want to keep our dog safe, but unfortunately we did hear gunshots yesterday,” Carlson said.

Silverman was transferred to Lee County Jail and the 15-year-old boy was transferred to the Juvenile Assessment Center.
