Scam alert: Hurricane donation fraud

and last updated

The Better Business Bureau are warning people looking to donate money to help with hurricane relief efforts.

The agency said there are scammers out there trying to get their hands on your donations.

They said criminals are trying to spoof you by duplicating a charity website but it’s not legit.

To determine what’s real and what’s not, they said you can verify a charity by visiting Give.org.

The website allows you to research reports that specify if the charity meets the BBB standards for charity accountability.

You should be aware of the charities trying to get you to act now, like donating money on the spot.

Also, be cautious of social media posts, text messages on your phone and any links in emails telling you to click to a donation page.

The Better Business Bureau said it’s important to research all charity organizations before donating.

They also said the charities should be registered with the state of Florida.
