SANIBEL, Fla. -- The City of Sanibel declared an emergency situation Thursday to enable efforts to stop beach erosion that's threatening a stretch of roadway on the island.

Beach erosion on the north end of the island near Sanibel-Captiva road has resulted in the shoreline getting dangerously close to the road.

The emergency declaration by the city allows for a quicker response to use sandbags to reinforce the shoreline. The expedited process will allow the work to be done by late January, instead of a timeline months longer on the normal timeline.

The project is expected to cost $38,000 and emergency funding will be applied for through the Lee County Tourism Development Council.
