SANIBEL ISLAND, Fla. -- Dogs are now allowed to join their owners at restaurants in Sanibel Island.
Sanibel city council passed the amendment this week but it comes with a catch. The ordinance said dogs are only allowed at outdoor seating areas of restaurants.
Dogs are still not allowed inside the restaurants, only service dogs are allowed inside.
The ordinance also said owners must keep their dogs on a leash at all times. Any employee who pets a dog must wash their hands. Dogs are also not allowed on chairs or tables or near any dishes or silverware. If your dog has an accident, it must be cleaned up immediately.
The decision to allow dogs is still up to each restaurant on the island.
Each restaurant would have to go through a registration process to allow dogs to eat next to their owners.
