CAPE CORAL, Fla. - A Cape Coral man woke up Wednesday and discovered his safe and more than $20,000  were stolen.

The victim filed a report with Cape Coral police that an unknown person removed a safe and its contents without his permission from his home on Blackburn Circle.

The gates outside of their Sandoval homes are supposed to keep thieves out, neighbors said.

"I know a gated community isn't Fort Knox," said Vinny Zaleski, who has lived in the community for nine years. "You don't expect to hear things like that happening here," he added.

The police reports said the victim has recently had several renovations done. The unknown person or persons removed the unbolted safe from the floor of the upstairs closet. The homeowner told detectives more than $20,000 in cash, passports, and deeds were inside the safe.

"I'm sorry it happened to him," said Al Sheppard, who lives across the street from the victim. "It shouldn't happen to anyone."

The victim plans to press charges if a suspect is found.
