COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. -- Investigators say a report of an active shooter at the David Lawrence Center in Naples last month was accidentally triggered by a man dealing with a robocall at his home.
On September 24th, the Collier County Sheriff's Office received several 911 calls of an active shooter on the campus. Those calls were made by employees at the center, who got notifications about an active shooter.
The threat turned out to be a false alarm. Deputies searched the entire campus twice to make sure everything was safe and secure.
Investigators later discovered that six calls were made to the alert system that evening from a home in Lehigh Acres. One of those calls somehow activated the active shooter alert.
Detectives spoke with a man at the residence, who explained that he had received a robocall that evening about lowering his mortgage rate. After being disconnected from that call, he dialed back to the number listed as the source of the call. He called several times, but was asked to enter a pin. Since he didn't know the pin, he entered random numbers. On one of the calls, he entered the last 4 numbers of the phone number.
He also reported the number to the Lee County Sheriff's Office Fraud Hotline.
He says he didn't know he was calling the David Lawrence Center, and was trying to speak to the person who called him initially.
Investigators say there will be no arrests in this case.
