ICE operation leads to 5 arrests in Lee County

LEE COUNTY, Fla., - A Southwest Florida immigration attorney says more large scale operations are likely after agents with U.S Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, arrested 5 people in Lee County last week.

The arrests were part of a larger bust that stretched across Florida, into Puerto Rico and the U.S Virgin Islands. In total, 271 people were arrested and could now be facing deportation. 

"There's definitely been a shift in focus when it comes to immigration law in the United States when enforcement has become the priority," said Indera Demine, an immigration attorney in Fort Myers. "Everyone that's here undocumented is deportable and will be deported."

ICE says the operation was meant to target immigration violators and people who pose a threat to public safety.

"ICE continues our commitment to making our communities safer by removing threats to our public safety," said Marc J. Moore, field office director for the ERO Miami Field Office, which oversees all of Florida, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. “Communities across Florida and Puerto Rico are safer today because of the hard work of the men and women of ERO.
