FORT MYERS, Fla. -- The Lee County Sheriff's Office is investigating after a woman found a threatening note with racist language and curse words.
Sonia Angulo was only living in Fort Myers for three months before she got the note on her mailbox.
She moved from Mississippi.
"They don't have too many Latinos over there. In Mississippi, we got a lot of racist people. So when I moved here, I was excited they got a lot of Latinos," Angulo said.
She said she doesn't know her neighbors, or many people in Southwest Florida, so she doesn't understand why she was targeted by a hateful note targeting her family.
She said she and her daughter were heading to a doctor's appointment when they noticed a letter on their mailbox, so she asked her daughter to see what it was.
"She said 'Mommy, no this is garbage.' I said 'No, open it.' So she opened it and she read it, she was like "Oh my gosh, mommy, look what this says!'" Angulo said.
Written on the paper was a hurtful hand written note using a derogatory term for Hispanics directed toward Angulo's family and curse words, saying "I'm going to kill you F****** cockroaches. Get out!"
"I was so scared, so I asked my daughter what should we do, and she said call the police, mommy, and report this," Angulo said.
"It's sad because they don't know me. They don't know me at all."
She said she's not letting her kids outside alone and is using the note to teach them a lesson.
"There are people doing a lot of bad things in the world. Sometimes people, they're racist," Angulo said.
The Lee County Sheriff's Office is investigating this as a harassment case and have taken that note as evidence.
