FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Police are warning citizens of a phone scam in which callers claim to be Fort Myers police officers in an attempt to collect fines or court costs.
According to FMPD, the scammers will state that the victim owes money for past crimes or violations and try to collect immediately. The scammer’s phone number may even appear on the recipient’s caller ID as coming from the FMPD.
This is known as “spoofing” and is meant to try and further intimidate the victim.
The Fort Myers Police Department say they will never directly contact a citizen by telephone to collect any outstanding fines, fees or alleged court costs.
If such a call is received, hang up and report it to the department’s non-emergency telephone number of (239) 321-7700.
