CAPE CORAL, Fla. — Coronavirus has caused an international scare, and most recently one dog tested positive for Covid -19 in China, leaving owners to wonder if their dogs or pets are at risk for contracting the disease here in the U.S.
One local veterinarian says the answer is yes. Dogs can get coronavirus, but there have not been any reports of pets getting the new string of coronavirus. She says there's no need to panic, but you should still protect your animals as you would yourself.
“So good hygiene, keeping them clean, dry, away from other dogs if they are concerned about the spread. At this point there has been no real concern for spread as there have been no cases in the U.S.”, said Dr. Cecilia Fisher, owner and operator of Cape Coral Pet Vet.
Dr. Fisher says there are symptoms to watch out for, vomiting, diarrhea, coughing and sneezing in pets, but be sure to use good judgement before rushing your animal to the vet.
“You just want to keep a close eye on them and common sense as far as if you feel like your dog is not well then have him brought in and examined”, said Dr. Fisher.
Dr Fisher also stresses that the chances are slim of contracting Coronavirus from your pets.
“So there have been no reports of transmission between dogs and people or any dogs that have been clinically ill with this disease. So I think it’s highly unlikely at least at this point for any dogs in the U.S.”, said Dr. Fisher.
She recommends everyone pays close attention to what top health officials are saying about the virus.
“Just like with any emerging disease, we need to just be vigilant, with it and take the appropriate precautions but not be overly anxious until we know more”, said Dr. Fisher.
