A woman used her cell phone to record motorcyclists as they passed cars illegally on a Collier County road.

"It's the law," said the woman, as her husband drove next to a biker on the shoulder. "Pay attention," she added.

The video, shot along Tamiami Trail as they headed to the Everglades City Seafood Festival this weekend, showed several motorcyclists used not only the shoulder to bypass traffic, but also the center of the lane.

"I think it's an accident waiting to happen," said Judy Clementis, after she saw the cell phone videos.

Other motorcyclists also thought it was dangerous.

"It's not a safe thing to do," said Roy Stabler. "I enjoy motorcycles, but they can come up on you quickly and it can scare you," he added.

4 In Your Corner reached out to Florida Highway Patrol to see the kind of penalties offenders would face.  A spokesperson says if you are caught in Lee County using the shoulder, you are subject to a $161 fine and 3 points on your license.

"They should up it a little more," said Danielle Atkinson. "Their lives are at stake," she added.

Stabler says traffic laws apply to everyone that uses roads.  "Drivers have to be careful and so do motorcycles," said Stabler.
