NORTH FORT MYERS, FLA — A North Ft. Myers woman was jolted awake as a line of storms passed though Southwest Florida Thursday, and discovered her carport missing.
“I was in the living room, dozing in the chair, and I heard a big bang!,” said Doris Mapes.
Mapes lives in the Lazy Days mobile home park, where a powerful burst of wind swept through.
“I got up and came in here to see what was going on, and the car port roof was gone.”
The car port blew across her back yard and came to rest on a neighbor’s house. No one was hurt.
“He said is your insurance gonna pay for that and at that point I had no idea.”
Fortunately it is covered.
“I had a brand new car, and Charlie raised car port and raised these stanchions around, so I had to get the car repainted.”
Mapes says the fire department cut off power to her home because there is a leak in her roof. She is staying with a neighbor while the home is being repaired.
