PUNTA GORDA, Fla. — A Punta Gorda parent is reminding everyone it doesn't always pay to try to be cool.
He was surprised when his son brought home a summer camp flyer inviting kids to "Netflix and chill,"a slang term that is not child-appropriate.
Nelson Rich’s six-year-old son attends a summer camp at Harold Avenue Rec Center in Port Charlotte.
He is concerned about the camp’s spirit week pajama and movie-themed day, titled “Netflix and chill.”
“I was very concerned, very worried about that because I know what “Netflix and chill” means, it just caught me off guard, ” said Rich.
The term “Netflix and chill” became popular on social media in 2015 and refers to a sexual hook-up.
“To have that connotation out there when dealing with minor children it was just kind of mind-blowing, ” said Rich.
We did reach out to the camp, and while they had no comment, Fox 4 suspects they simply didn’t realize the term had double meanings.
“As adults, we really should know what we are putting down especially when dealing with minor children, ” said Rich.
This is a learning lesson to choose your words wisely, especially when dealing with internet slang.
The summer camp has since changed the name of the day and administered new flyers to parents.
Rich says there is still more that needs to be done.
“Please admit that you were wrong, tell the parents we were wrong in printing this. We are very sorry, ” said Rich.
