CAPE CORAL, Fla. — Family, friends, and classmates paid their respects to Layla Aiken Tuesday. She was killed by a pick-up truck in a hit and run Monday morning.
The students at her school, Trafalgar Elementary, spent the day showing their condolences for a life taken too soon.
Second grader Nico Delgado didn’t know Aiken personally, But says he would see her on the playground from time to time. “Everybody was writing a note to her,” he said. “She would always be jump roping or doing hula-hoops.”
His mom, Vanessa Delgado, volunteers at Trafalgar every week and says when she went inside Tuesday it felt different. “Everybody was very sad and it was very quiet. You could kind of feel something. I don’t think that day will be forgotten,” she said.
And Aiken’s memorial continues to grow where the accident happened.

Cape Coral Coral Police said their investigation is just getting started. So far they have a person of interest identified and have seized the truck they believe was involved.
Sergeant Allan Kolak with Cape Coral Police tells Fox 4 they have that red truck that they believe ran over Layla, but not the driver. But when they catch them, they face serious consequences.
If charged, the person of interest could also face vehicular manslaughter charges. Kolak said that depends on their investigation.
Aikens funeral will be at the Gallaher American Family Home, across from Lee Memorial Hospital on Cleveland Ave on April 3rd from 3pm to 7pm. The family wishes to note that the funeral home is very small and they have extended the hours to accommodate as many people as they can.
