LEHIGH ACRES, Fla -- You may have seen Mike Magnant, a Lehigh Acres man, who picks up trash on the side of the road in Lehigh Acres neighborhoods, all in an effort to keep the area looking good. Now he says he's in a little bit of a jam. His cart he normally uses to pick up that trash, broke down.
Magnant started picking up trash in Lehigh Acres about a year and a half ago, with his daughter and his dog Freddy. His 30-year-old cart would be another addition to the trio and a very efficient way to pick up more trash.
"10 to 20 times more area that I can cover especially in the heat like this, so you can roll right up on trash pretty quick and clear the area really fast," Magnant said.
Magnant says his cart has been out service for a couple of weeks, the battery is shot, and the brakes need to be repaired. He says the total cost would be around $1,000.
So Magnant took to social media and started asking for the community’s help. So far they’ve met half of the $1,000 goal, but Mike says more help is needed.
All it takes is one real supporter to go 'hey I can afford a $1000 a year to keep your cart on the road,'" Magnant said.
Mike says this old cart just needs a touch-up, then he and Freddy can back to work, more efficiently.
"I’ll take whatever we can get. I mean we’re just doing it for free and we’re doing it for fun and we’re trying to set a good example so it doesn’t cost any many to be kind," he said.
