Update 3/18 5:50 a.m.: A maze of caution tape still envelops an intersection where a deputy-involved shooting took place late Thursday. The area of State Road 82 and Gunnery Road/Daniels Pkwy. remains closed to traffic and drivers are asked to seek alternate routes as the investigation continues.

Our original reporting continues below:

The Lee County Sheriff's Office confirmed a shooting involving a male deputy at State Road 82 and Gunnery Road in Lehigh Acres.

LCSO deputies confirmed that the deputy was shot in the arm during a robbery where the suspect was shot dead. At last check, the deputy is at the hospital in stable condition.

Sheriff Carmine Marceno said "Our deputy observed a stolen motor vehicle, attempted to stop it and in doing so the suspect starts to fire and presented deadly force to our deputies. The deputy exchanged gunfire and was hit in the shoulder area by a bullet from the suspect. The male suspect is deceased and [was] a violent felon.

"Under no circumstance will I tolerate that. My deputies kiss their loved ones goodbye in the morning and want to come home to their families. In my county we meet deadly force with deadly force and today is another testament of that. We train every day of our lives and that's how we perform, I'm so thankful my family member seems okay and stable in the hospital," Sheriff Marceno.

Sheriff Carmine Marceno said that he talked with the deputy who was shot. Marceno also spoke with the deputy's wife, sending his thoughts and prayers to his deputy.

Another person was in the stolen car during this incident.
