LEE COUNTY
Lee County and its partners are activating its Cold Weather Outreach Plan Tuesday evening.
The plan is being implemented because of the expected low temperatures Wednesday morning.
Lee County Emergency Management, the Lee County Department of Human & Veteran Services, Lee County Administration, and county partners are asking people in the community to donate blankets and winter clothing.
Donations such as can be dropped off at the four recreation centers Tuesday afternoon through Friday.
Those centers are Estero Recreation Center, North Fort Myers Recreation Center, Veterans Park Recreation Center in Lehigh Acres, and Wa-Ke Hatchee Recreation Center in south Fort Myers.
The official says things like coats, gloves, blankets, and hats will help them assist homeless people and those in need.
The county is planning to have volunteers and staff distribute blankets, hand-warmers, socks, hot coffee at several designated outreach locations between 5 pm and 6 pm today.
They also plan to give out a one-day LeeTran pass if a homeless person accepts a sheltering offer.
They will also conduct targeted outreach throughout today to known homeless encampments in the area.
OKEECHOBEE COUNTY
The Okeechobee Chapter of the American Red Cross announce cold weather shelter opening for tonight.
In anticipation of the upcoming freezing temperatures overnight, Okeechobee County in partnership with the Okeechobee Chapter of the American Red Cross will open a cold weather shelter at 7pm tonight, Tuesday December 8, 2020.
Lockdown of the shelter will be at 10pm.
The shelter will be located at the Douglas Brown Community Center, 826 Northeast 16th Avenue, Okeechobee FL 34972.
