FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Coming together as a community to make bus stops safe was the overall theme as dozens of parents and school leaders spoke at Tuesday nights town hall meeting.

This has been on the forefront of parents minds after 8-year-old Layla Aiken was hit and killed at a bus stop a month ago.

Parents addressed the Lee County School Board, "where do we go from here, there's a lot being proposed," said Lacey Williams, Parent.

In return the school leaders answered, "I think the most important thing we are doing right now is working with our community to establish safe and permanent bus stops.” said Dr. Greg Adkins, Superintendent, Lee County Schools.

Adkins emphasized this is a community effort, but some parents say the school board isn't doing its part, “I was hoping they’d recognize that we are working so hard, and we are told keep the faith and keep on going, because a lot of this fizzles out it’s kind of a slap in the face to be honest with you because this isn’t going to fizzle out,” said Erin Diaz, Parent.

The school board says there's been a task force established to look at adding sidewalks, benches, and educating kids on safety. A meeting discussing recommendations will be held May, 20th.
