HENDRY COUNTY, Fla. — A LaBelle High School teacher was arrested on Friday for bringing a firearm on school property.

English teacher Lisa Horton, disclosed to another staff member that because she had a Carry Conceal Weapon permit, she carried a gun to and from school. During the conversation, she was asked if she had a gun in school. She responded by saying it was in her vehicle, which was parked in the school parking lot.

Hendry County Sheriff's office noted she did not carry the firearm inside; it was kept in her vehicle.

Horton did show a valid Florida Carry Conceal license but according to Florida Statute 790.06(12)(a), "A license issued under this section does not authorize any person to openly carry a handgun or carry a concealed weapon or firearm into…any school, college, or professional athletic event not related to firearms; Any elementary or secondary school facility or administration building."

School officials notified the School Resource Officer immediately and followed all procedures under the Marjorie Stoneman Douglas Public Safety Act. The firearm was secured, students and staff were not in danger.
