How to stay safe during an active shooting incident

Following the shooting in Jacksonville, many people are asking how someone with a gun was able to get into such a crowded, high profile event in the first place. And if what happened there can happen here?

Former Police Chief, Security Expert and owner of Global Investigative Group in Fort Myers Walter Zalisko says these kinds of gaming events involve professionals vying for prize money and the competition is fierce. That combined with the large number of people, and an assumption that everything will be fine, may have caused people to let down their guard.

He recommends first and always to be aware of your surroundings. He calls it 'Situational Awareness'.

Some tips include making a mental note of all the exits. Leaving at the first sign of trouble. And never being foolish enough to take even a moment to retrieve any personal items.

Unfortunately, Zalisko says, most people in general walk around with blinders on and that adds to the problem.

In addition he says don't put too much credence in body language because what you're reading may not always right. An angry face or someone looking away is more likely a personality trait than a shooter planning his or her next move.

Finally says Zalisko when in doubt go with your gut.
