Free home check-ups in Cape Coral while you are out of town this holiday season

CAPE CORAL, Fla. -- During the holidays, several people go out of town to visit family and friends.

While you are away, your home becomes an easy target for criminals who want to steal or damage your things.

Volunteers with Cape Coral Police are providing a free service where they complete routine check-ups on your home while you are gone.

Every day, they will check for damage around your house, like broken glass and ripped screens.

They will also make sure doors are locked and nothing is out of place.

Volunteers will check your home for up to 30 days while you are away.

Cape Coral Police said if volunteers see anything out of the ordinary, they will notify law enforcement right away.

They also said this service is very useful because it gives them a much smaller window to investigate a crime.

It’s much harder when you return home from a trip after a month and realize it has been burglarized.

Police said this service is available year-round and it’s been around for several years.

As of Dec. 19, nine houses in Cape Coral have signed up.

To sign up for the house check-ups, you can visit the Cape Cops Vacation House Check Service.
