The Hendry County and Glades County Sheriff’s Office are investigating a series of threats made on social media over coastal water issues.
Hendry Sheriff Steve Whidden says the threats came from several activists and were directed toward people living along Lake Okeechobee.
One post slammed the sugar industry for not helping solve the pollution problem, the user threatened to show up at their door step with the “2nd amendment in hand."
Another threatened take physical action, using a welder and a rifle if need be.
The Hendry County Sheriff’s Office says it is looking into these threats individually and will decide if any action needs to be taken.
Clewiston resident Lisa Walker says she’s been cyber-bullied for expressing her opinions about water quality issues.
"Send the water south, flood my community, I’m just a sugar baby.”
Walker says she’s also heard people refer to the lake as a toilet bowl or multi purpose hole.
The comments hurt her, but she says she’s more concerned about people’s lack of open mindedness about the water crisis
“I’m more concerned about the idea that people are concerned with their property values, or more concerned about finding somewhere to point the finger.”
Anyone who knows anything about the threats, or feels they have been a victim is asked to call the Hendry County or Glades County Sheriff’s Office.
