LEHIGH ACRES, Fla. --- Lee County Sheriff's responds to a dog being shot in Lehigh Acres on Wednesday.
Deputies say the incident occurred just east of Sunshine Boulevard North. While en route to the scene deputies learned that a dog had been shot.
A witness told deputies they saw a male, between 25 to 35 years old, wearing a black shirt and jeans standing on the other side of the canal. The man reportedly told the witness he shot the dog after it bit his son. According to LSCO, the witness says the man then turned, walked away and is believed to have driven away.
The dog, a female Pit Bull, was spotted swimming in the water with multiple gunshot wounds and was attempting to swim to safety.
The wounded and frightened dog was found in a nearby wooded area near resident's homes. Neighbors and deputies used clean towels to carry the injured dog.
The dog is being cared for by the Lee County Animal Services.
