CAPE CORAL, Fla-- Diplomat Elementary School will host their 2nd Annual Run for Recess 5k presented by Achieva Credit Union in hopes of raising money for a new playground.
Physical Education Coach Morgan Wright believes playtime should be just as modern as the classroom.
“I want to find ways to get kids outside enjoying and getting a love of fitness early on, so they end up being lifelong learners and lovers of fitness," said Coach Wright.
The school's newest mission to enhance playtime is focused on one specific spot in the schoolyard. Principal Mara Vertrees said she worries about her students' safety because the play area has no shade.
"It’s blistering hot outside and to ask a 5-year-old to come outside and play in an area where there is absolutely no shade is wrong," said Principal Vertrees.
She also plans to add handicap-accessible swings and a sensory play area.
The growing school hosted a similar 5k last year which help provide enough funding to help build an entirely new playground.
“We are working together to get that support through the community and the parents," said Principal Vertrees. "We can make sure the kids have what they need, so when they play safe, they play safe.”
Runners, joggers, and walkers are all invited to join in on the race. It will be at Diplomat Elementary School on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 8 a.m.
