PUNTA GORDA, Fla. - Deputies for the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office said a simple traffic stop turned into a major amphetamine bust Sunday night.
Deputies stopped Joshua Matzen Sunday night for a seatbelt violation and expired registration on the license plate on a trailer, deputies said. Matzen consented to a search which turned up 1.2 grams of methamphetamine in two bags in his pocket. He was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.
During the investigation, deputies said information about a larger amount of drugs at a nearby storage unit was revealed.
Based on that information, deputies responded to Five Oaks Mini Storage where they said they found two suspects matching Matzen's description from the traffic stop. They were identified as Michael Goff and Alexis Walton. A search of a trash bag and smaller shopping bag was denied, but a drug detector canine signaled to one of the plastic bags, leading to a search, deputies said.
Inside the plastic bag were three bags with a total of 56 grams of methamphetamine that was packaged and labeled for sale, deputies said. Goff was arrested and charged with trafficking more than 14 grams of amphetamines, possession with intent to sell and possession of drug paraphernalia.
