Winning by just a couple hundred votes, Joe Coviello will become the next mayor of Cape Coral.

"A win is a win, we're excited about the stance we took during the campaign," said Coviello, who defeated challenger Michael Hollow by one percent.

The defeated candidate says low voter turn out doomed his campaign.

"Less than 20 percent of our voters are determining our fate, anytime we have that, it isn't promising numbers."

Coviello is promising a bright future for the city, when he takes over for outgoing Mayor Marni Sawicki.

Sawicki found herself embroiled in several controversies both in her personal life and at city hall.

Coviello and the newly elected city council members want a clean slate.

"I see a new beginning, I think we are going to take that book and turn the page, and I want to move that forward in a positive light."

Hollow hasn't ruled out running for mayor again, for now, he's hoping Coviello restores some stability to the city.

"I hope he's not more of the same, I hope he can bring a sense of decorum to the council, and that he's not a politician."

Coviello and the new council members will be sworn in November 20th.
