CAPE CORAL, Fla. -- Firefighters say low visibility during a rainstorm caused a driver to crash into a Cape Coral canal.
They say the incident happened Sunday evening along Bayside Court.
They say the driver turned into a driveway at the end of a cul-de-sac, thinking it was a roadway over the canal. Instead, the vehicle went into the water.
A couple was in the vehicle at the time. The husband managed to escape the vehicle, and then break a window to get the wife out.
The man climbed onto a seawall and the woman waited on the vehicle's roof until firefighters were able to provide a ladder.
The Cape Coral Fire Department urges drivers to use extreme caution when driving in heavy rain, and recommend keeping a vehicle escape tool handy in your vehicle.
