NAPLES, Fla. — The Florida Housing Finance Corporation's Board of Directors unanimously awarded Collier County $7.8 million to fund affordable housing. This is the first time in more than a decade that collier county has received state funding for affordable housing development.

Cormac Giblin the Housing and Grant Development Manger for Collier County says this new development will help those families to live comfortably.

“What this will do is it’ll make unites available for to those working families that more affordable options to live and work here,” said Giblin.

The development will have 82 units and is set to be finished in the next 2 years .. as more and more people move to the area.

“The need for more affordable homes in Collier County is very great our studies show that we need about 1,500 unites each year to keep up with the pace of population growth and the wages that are paid here in Collier County,” said Giblin.

Giblin says this started about 2 years ago ...with a detailed plan.

“The community housing plan has several different strategies that all work to increase the supply of affordable housing and certainly using surplus lands and applying for available state moneys is one of them and we’ve got several others that are pm the works too,” said Giblin.

He says this step forward is proof..the community can find solutions..together.

“This shows how valuable a public private partnership can be between the county and a private developer and as we see these units come forward we hope to replicate this model many times here in Collier County,” said Giblin.
