The Red Cross opened a cold weather shelter in Immokalee, which will remain open until 9:00 a.m. Thursday.  It’s located at Immokalee Community Park.

"Some people are not familiar with the coldness when it does come here,” said Red Cross volunteer Raybo Frank.

For those not staying in shelters the Florida Department of Health is urging people to stay safe when they heat their homes.

"You never want to heat your home with a stove, or an oven.  You also don't want to burn and charcoal or gas grills inside the home,” said Spokesperson Andrea McKinney.

Generators should be run outside the home and not in garages.

It’s also important to keep yourself warm.

“You want to make sure if you are covering any exposed skin.  If you have to be outside and don't have those warm mitts or scarves, make sure you're dressing in layers,” said McKinney.

Those wanting to use the shelter in Immokalee should bring their own bedding.  No pets are allowed with the exception of service animals.
