LEE COUNTY, Fla. — It's been nearly a week since two firefighters went missing off the coast of Cape Canaveral, and the U.S. Coast Guard urges any and all boaters to stay safe.

"It doesn't matter what your profession is, accidents happen to anybody and everybody," said Ayla Kelley, a Public Affairs Specialist with the Coast Guard.

She says before any trip, make sure you file a float plan.

"Telling someone that you trust where you're going, when you're going to go there and when you plan to be back," Kelley said, is crucial information for the Coast Guard in the beginning of a search.

She also says in addition to having a cell phone on board, consider having a marine band radio.

She said, "If you ask for the Coast Guard on channel 16, that's where we're going to hear your distress call and we'll be able to answer you and communicate with you what's going on."

Also making sure everyone on board has a life jacket is important.
