CAPE CORAL, Fla. — Nearly two hundred “Close the Camps” protests are scheduled across the country to close migrant detention facilities. Two of those are here in Southwest Florida.

Protesters plan to line up in front of Congressman Francis Rooney’s offices Tuesday.

The group MoveOn is organizing the protests, and said they want local congressmen to see the poor conditions of migrant detention centers for themselves and stop funding them.

Lawmakers toured a detention center in Clint, Texas Monday and called the conditions unacceptable. Many people detained did not have access to soap, toothbrushes or showers.

Even though members of Congress are out of the office for the fourth of July holiday, protesters said they want them to take action when they return.

There are nearly 200 protests planned across the country Tuesday, including one at Congressman Rooney’s offices in Naples and Cape Coral. They’re scheduled to start at noon.
