CLEWISTON, Fla — The Clewiston Police Department says one of its officers was attacked while conducting a traffic stop.

It happened on December 10th on East Obispo Avenue.

Police say the officer was in a marked city-issued patrol car when he was ambushed by a person armed with a knife.

They say the person attempted to stab the officer multiple times while the officer was in his patrol car.

Clewiston Police say the person verbalized a desire to die during the assault.

They say the officer was able to fend off the attack.

Police say the officer attempted to call for assistance but was unable to due to failed radio transmissions from his handheld radio.

He was able to request additional units from his car radio.

CPD says the officer was able to subdue the armed person without injury.

Both the officer and the armed person were unharmed.

The City of Clewiston says it is beyond proud of the officer and his quick thinking and reverence for life safety for all.

The police also released video footage of this incident with the hopes of raising awareness of the daily hazards that law enforcement officers nationwide face.

They also hope to raise awareness of mental health issues.
