CAPE CORAL, Fla. -- The city of Cape Coral will consider an ordinance that would impose harsher punishment for those who violate city-issued burn bans.
The city issued a burn ban last week.
The Cape Coral Fire Department presented a proposal at Monday night's meeting for an ordnance that would fine burn ban violators $500.00, or charge that person. The ordinance reads:
"Any person who violates any provision of this section may be punished either by imprisonment for a term not to exceed 60 days or a fine not to exceed $500.00 or by both."
The Cape Coral Fire Department said the proposal is in preliminary stages. They will present more information to the Cape Coral City Council in June, where public comment will be heard.
