Cape Coral Police give tips on how to avoid 'Box Stalkers' during holidays

LEE COUNTY, Fla. — Now that all of our presents are unwrapped and open, the Cape Coral Police Department wants to help keep your presents safe this year by avoiding "box stalkers."

Police say leaving an empty TV box, game station box, computer box or anything similar out in your trash for everyone to see can attract thieves. Electronics are typically the most sought after presents, so police say seeing an empty box in your trash, that once held that item might not be a good idea.

To help keep thieves away this year, police say you can take your boxes directly to waste management or recycling center. For locations in Lee County, click here.

You can also break down boxes or tear them into smaller pieces so they are unrecognizable.

Police say it also might be a good idea to put the empty boxes at the bottom of your trash can. Put other garbage on top to keep thieves away. In addition, make sure your name and address is removed from every box.
