CAPE CORAL, Fla. — The Cape Coral Police Department is looking to boost up security by installing more license plate readers on main roadways leading into the city after receiving a $93,000 grant from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

On Monday, the Cape Coral City Council approved the purchase of the license plate readers.

The license plate readers would help Cape Coral Police find stolen cars, people on the wanted list, and help solve Amber Alerts.

The cameras would scan license plates of passing cars and compare the plates to different databases, and would allow the police department to create a license plate “hot list” to receive alerts when a specific license plate has been scanned.

"I think it's a very good idea. You need to have more protection for amber alerts and stolen vehicles," said Steve Johnson, a resident of Cape Coral.

The Cape Coral Police Department says there are already ten license plate readers installed in Cape Coral, but did not say how many more they are looking to add.
