CAPE CORAL, Fla. — Officers responded to a call about a possible impaired driver driving a dark colored KIA on Hancock Bridge Parkway.
Officers observed the KIA swerving and drove off the road to the right and on to the sidewalk.
The KIA stopped briefly and then re-entered the roadway. A short time later, the KIA drove over the median curbing, into the median, and hit a cement utility pole.
The utility pole was knocked down.
The driver, William Bertel, 30, was still inside the KIA when Officers began to check if he needed medical attention.
Bertel showed signs of impairment and was believed to be injured.
Bertel was medically cleared.
Officers requested Bertel to complete field sobriety exercises, but he refused. Bertel was also asked to take a breath test, and he refused.
It was later found that it hit eight mailboxes.
Bertel was charged with: Driving Under the Influence, Driving Under the Influence Causing Property Damage, and eight counts of Leaving The Scene of a Traffic Crash.
