Cape Coral cracking down on nuisance homes

Posted

CAPE CORAL, Fla. -- The City of Cape Coral is working to get repeat criminals out of your neighborhood by creating a nuisance abatement board.

City Council unanimously approved the proposal Monday. The board will allow police to issue warnings, citations, or take other legal action against property owners or renters who are participating in illegal activity at a home on a regular basis. This includes drug trafficking and prostitution.

Cape Coral Police Corporal Phil Mullen explained the board will save the department time and money, because they won't have to keep investigating calls to the same residence more than once for the same thing. "We're talking about the houses we've served a drug warrant on, and six months later after that person is let out of jail, we have to serve a warrant on that same house again," he said. "We won't have to focus on the same problem all the time. We either get them to change their behavior, or they can do it elsewhere."
