CAPE CORAL, Fla — With Veterans Day approaching, one Cape Coral Business brings awareness to the 22 service members who die by suicide every day.
To highlight the troubling statistic, the owner of Somewhere on 47th Terrace in Cape Coral hosted a 22-hour Cut-A-Thon called Saving Lives one Clip at a Time.
That's one hour for every veteran lost.
Salon owner and proud marine veteran Bob King says his goal is to raise $10,000.
He started cutting at 10 am on Saturday and kept going until 8 am on Sunday.
King says it's our responsibility to take care of the people, and what better place to start than withing our veterans.
"As an 18, 19-year-old person, you see things that nobody should see, ever, and when you get back, there's not that support system there, and sometimes they sink to that depression, and they think that's the only way out," King says.
"So, hopefully, we can raise awareness and bring some help to these people.">
A wash and cut was a $25 donation.
FOX 4 was told 100% of the donations will go towards two charities, Lukes' Wings, which provides complimentary airfare to wounded and ill military members and their families.
Proceeds will also go to the Gavin D. Lux Memorial Fund.
King says they plan on making it an annual event.
