LEE COUNTY, Fla. — The outrage continues after four Minneapolis police officers are fired in the death of a Black man identified as 46-year-old George Floyd.
The incident, caught on camera, sparking a nationwide outcry as it shows an officer kneeling on a man’s neck until he lay motionless.
“ When you have to put your knee on someone for 10 min plus then do you become just as worst as the crook that he’s trying to arrest, he’s breaking the law, ” said James Buchanan.
Fox 4 spoke with some local candidates for sheriff, asking what they would do to prevent further incidents like this.
“It is not a case of brutality or excessive force this is a homicide, ” said Jim Leavens.
Protesters gathered in Minneapolis, outraged over the death of George Floyd.
The investigation now lies in hands of the US Department of Justice and the FBI.
The Mayor of Minneapolis, Jacob Frey is now calling for charges to be brought against the officers involved.
On Wednesday, President Trump called on both organizations to expedite their investigations.
But many in the black community say the underlying issues go beyond this one incident.
“I don’t care what race sex political status money everybody should be treated like human beings, ” said Coach Ray.
Ray says if elected as Lee County Sheriff he plans to instill a life coaching course into deputy training.
“If you can see the good in someone knowing what their potential is then I believe that would have a huge impact between the community and law enforcement, ” said Coach Ray.
Jim Leavens is also running for LCSO sheriff he says he is focused on hiring officers of good moral standing.
“Good background investigations, good training, these kinds of things you weed out in the beginning...notice anger management, ” said Jim Leavens.
We also reached out to the Lee County Sheriff’s office for their perspective, but they declined to comment.
